Begin Your Walk · Chapter 3

Who Gets to Tell You Who You Are

Chapter summary

Asha dislikes photographs and compares herself unfavourably with talented friends. While helping her little cousin make a birthday card, she discovers that her listening makes someone feel valued. Talking with her mum and reading Psalm 139 helps her question her belief that she has nothing to offer, although her insecurity does not disappear overnight. The teaching grounds everyone's dignity in being made in God's image, rather than appearance, popularity or achievement. Readers should challenge unfair self-labels, ask caring people to identify strengths, practise an ability, and celebrate others without diminishing themselves. Worries about bodily changes should be discussed with a parent, carer or health professional.
